“I hate being the first one to explain," he grumbled. "But you are ready to know, so here it is, sweet Alice: I’m an angel.” He tacked on a reassuring grin, like an extra ruffle on an especially silly prom dress.
Alice bleated a laugh. Or it might have been a hiccough. "Of course you are."
